Ten Things to Know Before You Friend Me

  • Oct. 3rd, 2004 at 7:54 AM
5/2009
I saw an entry like this in another person's journal. I thought it was a stellar idea.

Ten things to know before friending me. A warning label of sorts. Difficult exercise though. The following is subject to change if I decide its dorky.

Hello :)

1. I am very sure of who I am. If you try to play mind games with me you will be smited. I don’t come to LJ for abuse but exchange. So if you are some psychotic person with issues please note the lamb’s blood on the door and move along.
2. I can be quite understanding and always try to be helpful. I’m not the smartest person in the world but I have a viewpoint I am happy to share.
3. I don’t post dirty pictures of myself. I do post pics on occasion with no actual reason other than to do so.
4. I write about my life and the people in it. I rarely write on politics because I find there are lots of smarter people than me who do and quite frankly it’s just not something I enjoy for the most part in this forum.
5. I am a happy person. I lead a happy life. I don’t think it makes me a rube to do so. While I can appreciate true cynicism its not a color that suits me personally.
6. I am the poster child for personal responsibility. If you are into scapegoats we’re going to have issues.
7. I like interaction. I like resolution. I’d like to teach the world to sing but I don’t have the bloody time.
8. I will trust you from the get go. However, if you do something to violate my trust it will be lost forever. I don’t do drama, I do closure.
9. I am fairly open minded on most things but have my limits on others. I’d like to be all-inclusive but I’m not a cruise ship I’m a human.
10. I like everyone at first. That doesn’t always last. I am however respectful of your opinions and will be happy to have you contribute to any discussion you care to join in.

So - if you'd still like to be friends, please leave me a note and we'll talk ;)

Eithne,

I like you. I admire you. I especially like #s 6, 7, and 9 on this list. (i.e.- "I'd like to be all-inclusive but I'm not a cruise ship I'm a human.")

You rock. Thanks for the first smile of the day.

Ha!

Nah - this wasn't based on an incident but rather I was reading a person's journal and they had a link in their bio to a similar list.

Lately I've been gaining a few friends and figured maybe it was a good thing to do ;)

This is a splendid idea. Somehow or other I've managed to accumulate a few friends here and there that I've not bothered to return the favor to since all they know of me is what they read in my comments in other people's journals.

My comments don't paint a thorough picture of who I am, as they are merely snippets of all that goes on in my head at any given moment.

I think I'll start working on this list momentarily.

An Introduction;
In older times, one presented oneself to new people with a letter of introduction, written by someone known to be of good character. I'd ask the Peanut for same, but honestly, I'd prefer to let my own journal do the talking for me, and for this to be my letter of introduction.

I will, occasionally, for no better reason than to assuage my boredom, go traipsing off through friends pages just to see who there is to see out there. I came across you through our mutual friend, boiledpeanutBoiled Peanut, who I met by clicking 'random' one evening while home and bored. It was a chance meeting of someone I wouldn't have ever known anything about otherwise, and a very lucky find.

I'd like to friend you, as you've caught my interest. I think your list is common sense, but again... common sense is most uncommon nowadays. The internet is all about anonymity, after all, and many people use that to be the idiots they'd never dream of being in public.

On the subject of privacy; most of my journal entries are friends-only, because often I write about things that I don't want the world at large to peruse. As you've mentioned, there's no need to explain why... but it does lead to a bit of a catch-22, in that I have to friend you first before you can read most of my recent entries. However, about a year ago everything was open to everybody. Feel free, if the mood strikes you, to peruse those older entries as you like.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Slainte Mhath

Interested, and Interesting
I was sent your way by [info]fimbrethil and [info]fangorn. Mea maxima culpa as regards both cynicism (I'm getting better) and politics (a serious vice, I'm afraid). Other than that, I think your rules are quite livable. I'd like to friend you, and hope you'll consider reciprocating. Thanks!

Eithne,

I found you through [info]scrathe and I'm friends with [info]margoeve. I must admit that it was your striking photo that caused me to view your user info page, but then I saw that you live in Kansas City. That's where I grew up (actually I grew up in a small town south of the city in Missouri) so I thought it would be cool to chat with you. :-)

I think this post Ten "Things to Know Before You Friend Me" is a stellar idea (as you said). I've never had problems with #3 at my LJ but I'm sure it's a big problem if your journal if up long enough. I especially like #1. Your dual citizenship is interesting. My great-grandparents came to America from Ireland, so I don't qualify...one generation too late.
